Unit III: 19th Century Europe
In
this unit, we will examine the reaction by Europe in the aftermath of the French Revolution’s democratic experiment. A slide back to
absolutism as advocated by Metternich will result in decades of peace for the
major European powers, however, this peace is cover for a disgruntled populace
that boils over in revolutions in 1830 and 1848. We will also examine the
various “ISMS” including nationalism, conservatism, liberalism, romanticism,
and socialism that will emerge and greatly affect the European continent as
well as the world. The Industrial Revolution will also be studied with an
emphasis on the effects it had on the economic and social structures throughout
the continent.
