Even before World War II ended, the two emerging powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, were positioning themselves as the world leaders. The United States and its view of spreading democracy took hold in Western Europe as the Soviet Union took hold with its goal of spreading communism and creating a buffer in Eastern Europe. The struggle between the two competing countries would lead to tensions abroad including Asia, Africa, and Latin America.  In this unit, we will examine some of these events, the cause and effects, and how the outcomes have affected modern day society today. We will take a more in depth look at China as a case study. At the conclusion of this unit, we will examine current global issues.
